Nuclear Proliferation in the Middle East: the Yemen Crisis
Since the civil war in Yemen started in 2015, regional violence rapidly increased. The international involvement increased as well, specially in regards to weaponry with particular attention being paid to the potential for the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Foreign arms have featured heavily in the Yemen war, as Saudi Arabia has risen to the top spot as the world’s largest arms importer. Another important actor in the war and in the ‘nuclear weaponry race’ is Iran, as the Yemeni Houthis have been supported by Iran with nuclear ballistic missiles and other forms of armament.
The delegates of DISEC will be challenged to discuss the option of nuclear proliferation in one of the most prominent crises of this time.
